A GUIDE TO GUCCI SERIAL NUMBERS

Posted on

With a storied archive of beautiful handbag designs, the House of Gucci has amassed years of producing the finest and most sought-after pieces on the luxury market. The value behind the Gucci brand lies in the craftsmanship of every item.

Each Gucci bag comes with its own serial code. Unlike other designer brands, Gucci’s date codes do not represent a production year. But instead serves as a unique ID, divulging information about a bag's model and batch number.

What did Gucci’s Serial Number tags look like after 1990?

A series of 10-13 digits that make up a non-unique configuration appear on Gucci bags produced after 1990, located on the backside of a rectangular tab usually made from calfskin leather sewn near the bag’s top interior. Wallets and small leather goods typically feature serial numbers embossed on the interior.

Text boxes surrounding numbers in two lines, indicating the style number and batch number.

You will find two lines of numbers. The first line is the bag's style or model number. This is usually 6 digits but can variate between 5 to 7 digits. Entering the style number in a search engine can help you find the item online.
The second line shows the supplier code, which can be the same as other Gucci pieces produced within the same batch number.

Vintage Gucci serial numbers from 1980s-1990s

Early Gucci bags produced in the 1950s had a "Brev" number – a model number that was not consistent across different collections and soon fell out of use. During the 1960s, some Gucci bags had serial numbers while others did not. In the 1970s, Gucci bags no longer had serial numbers, sporting the Gucci script in cursive lettering. In the late 1970s to early 1980s, Gucci reintroduced the use of serial numbers in their Gucci Accessory Collection. Each item had a gold-print serial number (which could be partially peeling or fading today). Vintage Gucci bags produced from the 1980s - 1990s may feature rounded sewn-on tags with gold lettering, with numbers separated by dots.
If you do not find a code on your Gucci handbag, do not panic. Some vintage bags may not carry codes at all.
There you have it, a quick guide to help you familiarise yourself with the Gucci Serial Number. We hope this guide will help you in your journey to curate your dream designer collection!
